Dating apps make it easier than ever to search for a boyfriend, but searching too hard can turn every man into a candidate to be evaluated. After decades of relationships, I’ve come to think that love often has a better chance when finding it isn’t the main project of your life.

After seven long-term relationships over 45 years, I finally noticed a pattern. Love rarely arrived when I was searching for it. It appeared while I was busy building a life, through work, travel, friendships, and unexpected moments that only made sense in hindsight.
